Arsenal (Orsan)

The Arsenal, with its four vaults (above photo), was located in the very heart of the Old port (harbour) on the exact place where nowadays, the Gradska Kavana restaurant is situated.
Initially, it was built in the 7th century as a four section complex consisting of four vaults with the purpose to protect the entrance to the town and the place where town’s defence vessels (galleys) were docked as well as maintained and built/ rebuilt.
During the centuries the Arsenal (Orsan) was reconstructed several times and eventually, it became the closed building that nowadays houses popular Gradska Kavana Arsenal restaurant and cafe, one of the iconic and most popular places to sit and have a drink or meal indeed in the Town.
If you look closely on the facade of the building you will see the traces of all four vaults that used to be here. See how it looked in the old times.
