Theatres in Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik’s theatre is named after Marin Držić – the Dubrovnik’s renowned 16th century Renaissance playwright.
Established in 19th century, it is from the old times the last remaining theatre in Dubrovnik. Its building is located in the very centre of the Old Town right next to the Knezev Dvor (Town Hall).
The theater programmes are based mostly on Dubrovnik’s literary heritage performed by theatre’s permanent group of about 20 actors.
The programmes include plays by playwrights Ivo Vojnović, Marin Držić, Ivan Gundulić, Mavro Vetranović (just to mention a few) as well as some Croatian and world classics. The Marin Držić theater company also performs on Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
When in Dubrovnik, if possible, I never miss the opportunity to see one of their plays performed in small but cozy auditorium. They are well established group of actors and I would certainly recommend their performances.
The other theatre company in town which plays I like to see is Student’s Theatre “Lero”, established in 1960’s. Their programmes include Dubrovnik’s contemporary playwrights and directors Feđa Šehović and Davor Mojaš.
